5 Smart Ideas for Keeping Your Grocery Spending Under Control

5 Smart Ideas for Keeping Your Grocery Spending Under Control

budget, money, groceries, ideas

Aside from your mortgage, your biggest monthly expense is likely groceries. And unlike your mortgage, your car payment and most of the rest of your bills you actually have some control over how much you spend at the grocery store.

Here are five simple ideas you can start TODAY to get your grocery spending under control.

Make A Grocery Budget

Start by tracking how much you’re spending on groceries for a few weeks. From there, come up with a weekly or monthly budget. Allot that money for groceries and whatever you do don’t go over.

Next, try cutting back your budget by $20 per month. Keep going and see how low you can go. The remaining tips will help you do that without feeling like you’re depriving yourself.

Keep A Grocery Price Book

Who doesn’t love a bargain or a good deal? They are all over the store, but do you know if what they advertise as a good deal is actually saving you money?

Keeping a small notebook in your purse with the regular prices of the items you buy the most is a big help. This way you can see which deals are really “deals.” This also you help with determining what kitchen staple is the least expensive. Your price book will also come in handy when you browse through weekly grocery flyers. You can decide if a loss leader deal is worth driving to the store long before you ever set a foot out the door.

Use Coupons & Savings Apps

groceries, budget, money, ideas

I use apps when I go grocery shopping along with coupons whenever possible. These are my favorite apps that I’m currently using:

      • ibotta
      • Checkout51
      • Savingstar
      • Basket
      • Price Cruncher
      • Coupons
      • Flipp

Some Grocery Coupon Tips

        • If you’ve never clipped coupons before, the best way to start is by purchasing the Sunday paper. Most Sunday newspapers contain sales circulars and coupons. Create a shopping list of the things you need. Now, look for coupons that match the items you need.

        • Coupons can save you anywhere from twenty-five cents to a dollar or more on the stuff you buy every day. Occasionally you will have coupons that let you get a free item when you buy something else. For example, you can get a gallon of milk free if you buy two dozen eggs. These are helpful when you need both milk and eggs.

        • Coupons work the best in combination with other savings. Use a fifty cent coupon at a grocery store that doubles coupons. Doubling or tripling of coupons is listed in the store’s sales paper so you will know when to shop for the best bargains. More free groceries are coming your way when you use a coupon in conjunction with a “buy one, get one free” advertisement.

        • Many grocery stores have their own discount cards to save shoppers more money on each food bill. Weekly, money-saving deals on bread, cheese, meat, and other staples make certain stores more popular than others. This is the best time to use coupons. There are no restrictions on using coupons to enhance the already low deals provided by the store.

        • Some stores have bins where people put the coupons that they don’t need so others can use them. You could find a coupon for that new air freshener or that new yogurt you wanted to try. Coupons are great for purchasing things that you want to trial but wouldn’t think of paying full price for. If you use your coupon on a doubling day, you will save even more.

Where Do I Find Grocery Coupons?

        • Coupons are not just in newspapers. Many online sites offer members the opportunity to download and print coupons for their favorite items. Many coupons can be downloaded weekly and used at any store that accepts manufacturer’s coupons.
        • Clipping coupons really does save you money on your grocery bill. Use them to stock up on things you normally use and to try out new products. Don’t throw your savings away in the trash each week.

Come Up With A Few Frugal Dishes

groceries, money, budget, ideas

You don’t have to make drastic changes and eat nothing but rice and beans all week. Instead think of a few inexpensive dishes your family enjoys. They may be rice and beans. Or how about a big pot of soup or chili. Often meatless dishes will be your best frugal bet, or use meat in small portions on frugal dish days.

Enjoying frugal meals even just a handful of days during the month combined with using up any and all leftovers will make a big difference in your grocery budget.

Cut Out The Extras

Make a list before you head to the store and stick to it. Extras like the fancy bread from the bakery or the impulse buy candy you grabbed at checkout can really add up. Get in the habit of skipping those extras. Stick to your list and you’ll see your grocery bill decrease dramatically. Remember, all of the extras add up quickly and to the detriment of your budget.

Give these tips a try and see if you don’t start to see big savings on a weekly basis. What you do with all the extra money each month is up to you. Save up for a fun summer vacation, pay off those credit cards or start building your financial safety net.

Shop Alone!

I mentioned this in a previous post and I’ll say it again…shop alone if at all possible!  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone shopping with my husband and our little one in tow and the grocery “list” idea imploded.  The implosion usually takes place in the cookie aisle.  There are times when it is a very good idea to have a second and even a third pair of eyes.  It’s been my experience that says grocery shopping is not one of those times 🙂

7 Simple Habits to Keeping Your Life Clutter Free

7 Simple Habits to Keeping Your Life Clutter Free

Looking on the internet, you will find many blogs and businesses that offer help to those struggling with clutter. Do you fit this profile? You will be happy to know that there is help available. Follow these simple habits to keeping your life clutter free.

How many times have you lost your keys? Shoes? or important papers because there is too much clutter in your home? Families around the country are drowning in clutter that can cost time and money as well as cause frustration. Clearing the clutter from your home, and your life, can take time; but, it is well worth the effort. The end result is a clutter free life!

Create a cleaning and decluttering schedule (routine)

home, organization, declutter, organized

In order to remain clutter free, you’ve got to have a routine. Include chores for each member of the family so one person does not have to do everything. If you work on cleaning a little bit each day, it will make keeping your home clean much easier.

Go through your home

Take note of anything in your home that is out of place. Are there items that are piling up or things that bother you? Start with what bothers you most and sort through them. Get rid of things you no longer need or want. The goal is to clear small areas, one at a time, until you have cleaned the entire room. Go through each room until you have gotten rid of as much clutter as possible.

I have blog posts that address fast cleaning ideas, most of which are short and easy to do:

Simple Ways to Organize & Refresh Your Home Office

Master These 6 Cleaning Tips If You’re Overwhelmed By Housework

Emergency Cleaning Plan For the Busy Home

50+ Easy & Time Saving Home Cleaning Ideas

Get a handle on the papers!

This is our absolute worst offender. It is extremely difficult for us to have a clutter free environment with papers everywhere. Rather than stacking mail and other papers all over the room, create a specific and visible area to handle mail and pay bills. This could be a desk or a shelf with an inbox. Be sure to place a garbage can near your mail area so you can throw junk mail out as you go through the mail.

If you have room for a shredder, place this there as well! Along with the inbox, shredder and garbage can, it would also be helpful to keep a family calendar in the area. When you see paperwork that has an appointment or important date, you will be able to write the information directly into the calendar and toss the paper.

declutter, organized, home, organization

Designate a Dropoff Point

Place a coat rack or shelf with hooks near the door you use most often. Have everyone hang jackets, purses and book bags here when they come into the home each day. By placing these items in the same place each day, your family will be less likely to lose things.

Develop a Filing System

Develop a filing system so you can find important papers when you need them. You can use similar tactics to have a clutter free office or workspace. A clean work area can make your day more productive, which your boss will most likely appreciate.

Cut back on the commitments

I know that we all have obligations in some way, shape or form. But, too many obligations can lead to a cluttered life. We are busy. Between meetings, sports, band, volunteering or religious activities we are all going in different directions. Declutter your schedule by asking each person to look at their obligations and see which activity they can do without. This will reduce the amount of running and allow the family to eat together more often.

Get Help!

Finally, do not be afraid to seek outside help. If if you are simply overwhelmed with the current amount of clutter in your life, get help. There are professional organizers that can recommend simple habits to keeping your life clutter free. Now, this may not be the most frugal way to go about this; but, in the long run, it is a great investment, provided you stick to and use the advice that you’re given. They can also help you develop a routine that can work for you and your family.

Glass Bottles for Crafting Ideas

glass bottles, arts, crafts, ideas

Glass bottles come in many shapes and forms. You can find items of all different sizes and designs for your project. There are many reasons that this kind of product is sold in bulk and you are sure to find a lot that offers everything that you need for your project.

The type of item you will want to buy depends on the type of project that you have in mind. There are plenty of great ideas that are associated with glass bottles and you can do wonders with these craft items. The following are some examples of how you can put them to good use.

Glass Bottles as Gift Ideas

glass bottles, ideas, arts, crafts

Nothing is as special or as touching as a homemade gift. Why not create a signature scent for each of your friends? These presents are ideal for birthdays, the holidays or just about any other special occasion. Wholesale glass bottles are a fundamental part of this kind of present.

Glass Bottles for Fragrances & Perfumes

When you purchase the glass bottles for fragrances you are most likely going to have to buy in bulk. This is the best way to get rock bottom prices on the gear and you will find that the homemade fragrances are such a hit that you will want to keep a stock of them on hand.

I like to use wholesale glass bottles for perfumes that have a sprayer and cap that fits over the spraying mechanism. This is a personal preference and you may find that you prefer an old-fashioned perfume bottle that has a fitted top that is used to apply the fragrance. As a general rule the more potent the scent the less that you will want to use the sprayer.

Glass Bottles as Home Decor

glass bottles, arts, crafts, ideas

Glass bottles can also be used as decorative centerpieces. Perhaps you have several Coca Cola bottles laying around. If you are handy with a few simple tools and a couple of pieces of wood, you could easily repurpose those bottles into a really beautiful rustic centerpiece for your dining room table.

Add some much-needed color to a drab space in your home with a couple of painted glass bottles. You can get super creative with some paint and a desired color scheme.

Some of us prefer to use wholesale glass bottles for kitchen supplies. There is nothing more attractive than a food gift basket that includes homemade dressing and flavored olive oil in decorative glassware.

Most of these items are clear in color but you can find some in blues, pinks and just about any other color you can think of. I like to stick with clear wholesale glass bottles to keep the price down as much as possible. Colored glass is often a little more expensive than the basic clear ones.

Whether you want to use the items for presents, crafts or simple decorations for your home, nothing is more convenient or cost effective than wholesale glass bottles.

Where to Find Them

Glass bottles are fairly abundant and can be found in a variety of places. I have found them at my local thrift stores. The only real drawback to purchasing from a thrift store is if you want multiple of the same exact bottle, chances are pretty good that you will not find them.

That being said, if I want multiple bottles of the same exact type, I will turn to Amazon and see what deals I can find!

Simple Ways to Organize & Refresh Your Home Office

home office, organized, organization ideas

If you are running a home-based business, you must have a clean and organized home office right at your own home. However, after some time, that home office could look and feel more like a storage room. The result: dread having to go in there and chances are, you will fall behind in your work. You might be forced to work at the kitchen or at other places in your house.

Here are several organization and cleaning tips that could help you properly organize your own home office so that it could always be functional and presentable no matter what.

First, declutter!

organization, office, organized office

This is probably my favorite task to complete! A cluttered office is not an organized office! You have to categorize each item in the home office and decide which things should stay and which should go. Perform a basic decluttering activity. It would be advisable if you would classify items into things that you would:

  • Keep
  • Trash
  • Donate
  • Hold (pending decision – don’t mull over it too long!)

The last (pending decision) could be given a six-month shelf life. After that, you must already be decided what to do with the item. If you are not able to do so, you could put it into your trash or donate items. Items that are not useful anymore should be categorized as trash and should immediately go to the trash can.

Keep things that are obviously and logically useful and important. Donate or recycle for other purposes things that could still have other uses other than its former function in the home office. Keep in mind that the idea is to organize your office space.

Refresh Your Space

organized office, home office, organization

After clearing out your office, take a look around, paying particular attention to corners, baseboards and vents. These areas tend to accumulate a lot of dirt, dust, cobwebs, etc. And these are also areas that tend to go unnoticed.

Before getting your space organized it is a great idea to clean the space starting from the top down. Call me funny; but, i’ve never been able to work in a space that was dirty, no matter how organized it may have been. Think of the satisfaction you’ll have working in a space that is not only organized; but, it is also clean. This will make it easier to maintain and in the long run that’s what you want!

It would be ideal if you would decide to paint or repaint the room. I prefer bright and stimulating paint colors like blues or yellows so you could re-energize your newly organized room. Experts assert that a room designated as a home office could be more useful and cheerful if it would be painted or re-painted with attractive colors.

Now, we set up and get organized!

Turn to the desk

It is the area you would be using most time of the day. It’s the epicenter of your work and demands a high level of organization. An ‘L’ shaped one is most advisable. Put your computer, fax machine, phone, and printer in one wing. Assign the other wing for spreading out on. If you are right handed, put the phone on your left side so that you could talk and at the same time take down notes with your right hand (do the opposite if you are left-handed).

It would also be advisable if you would prefer to invest in all-in-one equipment, which combines phone, fax, printer, and scanner in one device for space efficiency.

Chances are you had a lot of old papers that you had to sort through before tossing or shredding. Make sure that your desk is equipped with a system that allows you to organize your papers efficiently. Depending on how you wish to set up your work space, there are many different avenues that you can pursue. I prefer the most frugal route; so, more often than not I will get pens, clips, etc from the Dollar Tree. But, for the stuff that I normally can’t find there, I usually turn to an online outlet like Amazon. Simply put, the variety is amazing and

Nothing Personal

organized, home office, cleaning ideas

Take out all personal things from the home office. Such items could only be a cause of distraction and could practically and visually clutter up the home office space. Have a box where you could put in all your magazines and print outs. If you think all your magazines and periodicals are just piling up and you do not get to read them all, get rid of those and cancel your subscriptions.

These organization tips would surely make your home office better. Do you have any office organization tips that you would like to share? Feel free to drop me a note in the comments section below!

Are You Putting Enough Thought into Your Mother’s Day Gifts?

Many mothers will not admit to this; but, they are finding themselves to bit disappointed with their mother’s day gifts.

Don’t get me wrong, all mothers will be very happy to receive their gifts. They will also be very grateful that they received one; but, they can tell if very little thought goes into them. They can tell if you got them something that you just grabbed off the shelf at a local big box store.

mother's day, gifts, thoughtful

Gifts like chocolates, candies, or flowers are commonplace. If they are lucky they may also receive a card. If they’re really lucky, they may even receive some jewelry like that pair of earrings she’s been scoping out. I think that the older we get, the more we tend to spend on our mother’s day gifts; but, it also seems that less time and effort goes into the present!

They want something that is unique and came straight from the heart!

How to Avoid a Awkward Mother’s Day

But your mother doesn’t want you to spend a bunch of money on her gift! Sure, she’ll be much happier receiving a gift, than receiving nothing at all; but, she will be much more excited about a gift that takes some of your time and thought, rather than money.

What is the best mother’s day gift that she’s ever received? Ask her! It very well may be a craft project you made when you were a child – we love and absolutely cherish those! It could be a first painting or a card with your hand traced; but, it will be some type of craft that you made. Don’t be surprised if she loved it so much that she still has it in her wardrobe somewhere!

mother's day, thoughtful, gifts

Time to Get Crafty!

Well, just a suggestion; but, why not make a mother’s day present this year? You don’t have to be a child to make mothers day crafts. You don’t really need to be that skilled or crafty either. There are many things you can make that will look great and are not that difficult to create.

There are many types of mother’s day crafts – just check out Pinterest for some inspiration! Perhaps one of the easiest things to make would be your own mother’s day card. If you’re good at drawing, or handy with graphical software on the computer, why not make your own card? Your mother will love you for it! Me personally, Canva is my go-to for all things imaging. I use Canva for my site and social media images and I also use it at work. It’s very handy and easy to use!

thoughtful, mother's day, gifts

A Few Crafting Suggestions

How about scrapbooking? If so, then how about doing some scrapbooking, and making your mother her own personalized scrapbook for this mother’s day? There are lots of things you could scrapbook on, from events in the previous year, a summary of your mothers life up to this point, or a scrapbook of the entire family. I guarantee this will go down as a great a treat!

Bouquets are always a nice idea, especially if it is customized to her likes. For this mother’s day, I am making some really cute looking candy bouquets. They cost almost nothing to make, look fantastic, and didn’t really take that long either. And I know what candies my mother likes (candy corn), so I know she’ll enjoy it!

Time to Get Started!

The important thing is to just think of some craft that you’re talented at and give it a spin! Trust me when I say that your mother will appreciate mother’s day crafts you have made, MUCH more than another mother’s day gift that lacks in thought and imagination!

So this mothers day, please – no boring, thoughtless presents! You’ve got time to think about it now, about what she likes and appreciates the most. Get those creative juices flowing and give her something that will say “I love you and am always thinking of you!”
